It's common knowledge that the internet LOVES cat pictures, gifs, and videos. Sure, other animals can do fun stuff like take goofy selfies or ride around on scooters like they're just one of the guys. Heck, some animals can even photobomb a picture like a pro or bring home the bacon by getting a job. But hardly any of those pets have reached true internet fame like the cats on this list.
1. Keyboard Cat
A true household name, Keyboard Cat was a viral cat video sensation — perhaps the first of its kind. Gracing Youtube when Youtube was barely even a toddler, Keyboard Cat featured a female cat called ‘Fatso’ playing an electric keyboard. Amazingly, the video was produced in 1984, but only found its way onto the internet 23 years later in 2007. As of right now, Keyboard Cat holds a staggering 53.2 million views.
2. Nala Cat
Nala the Cat, or Nala Cat, is the most-followed cat celebrity on Instagram. Nala Cat was adopted in 2010 by “Pookie” Varisiri Methachittiphan. Pookie adopted Nala from a Los Angeles shelter, when Nala was five months old. Nala is named after the Lion King female lion character, the wife of Simba. And now she is 10 years old. Pookie started the Instagram account for Nala to share photos of her with the family in Thailand. Later, Pookie adopted two other cats, Coffee and Luna. In September of 2019, the cat food “Love, Nala” was started by Pookie. The concept of the “Love, Nala” brand is to provide healthy grain-free natural cat food. The net worth of Nala Cat is $113 million as of 2020.
3. Grumpy Cat
Everybody loves Grumpy Cat! In September 2012, a Reddit user uploaded a photo of his sister's very annoyed looking cat, Tard (short for Tardar/Tartar Sauce), and the internet instantly fell in love. Soon, Grumpy Cat was everywhere and making oodles more money than any of us non-famous cat owners could ever dream of. Even though Grumpy Cat is now touring the country, scoring book and movie deals, and is generally as famous as a cat can ever be... something tells me she's kind of "meh" about it. Her owners, however, are probably loving life.
4. Venus
Two-faced people are, unfortunately, all too common these days — but two-faced cats? Venus won’t talk bad behind your back, but she does, incredibly, have a face comprised of two completely different colours. Split almost exactly down the middle, the right side of Venus’ face consists of jet-black fur and an emerald-green eye, whereas the left side of her face has light-ginger fur and a sky-blue eye. This phenomenon is a remarkable anomaly in genetic biology, and to this day no agreement has been reached by professionals on how the extraordinary case occurred.
5. Lil BUB
Lil BUB the cat, who is well-known for her sticky-out tongue looking, died in December of 2019. The unique appearance is because her lower jaw is too small to retain the tongue. She was suffering from feline dwarfism and bone infection before she died. Lil BUB died at the age of 8. Mike Bridavsky adopted Lil BUB from a shelter when she was a kitten. They traveled around the US to raise donations for local animal shelters. And Mike donated much of the profits from Lil BUB store merchandise sales to animal rescue groups. Lil BUB appeared in many shows such as Good Morning America, Today and The View. She also acted in some movies. A documentary Lil Bub & Friendz features her and some other social media famous cats, including Grumpy Cat and Nyan Cat.
