More than two thousand years ago, a magnificent lighthouse stood tall in the city of Alexandria on the southern shore of the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. It is known as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and was the first lighthouse built in the world.
It is no coincidence that this magnificent lighthouse first appeared in the city of Alexandria.
During the Ptolemaic Dynasty of ancient Egypt (306-30 B.C.), the capital was built here and became one of the most prosperous cities in the ancient world, an important place for trade and cultural exchange between the Mediterranean and Eastern countries.
In order to adapt to the development of navigation, the Egyptian king ordered Sostrath, a distinguished engineer at that time, to design and build a lighthouse. Construction began in 270 BC, and after five years, a lighthouse about 120 meters high was erected at the southern end of the breakwater of the Faros Peninsula.
The shape, structure, and materials used in the lighthouse are well thought out and unique. The base of the tower is filled with seawater-resistant glass blocks, and the gaps are filled with molten lead water.
The square conical tower is divided into three levels. The tower base is square, made of huge limestone slabs, each side is 30 meters long and 69 meters high. The second story is an octagonal tower made of magnificent marble paneling, 38 meters high.
There are many exquisite bronze statues built around the tower, some of which are said to ring the bell day and night to tell the time, while others have their hands always pointing to the sun and moving with it; when the sun sets in the west, their fingers automatically hang down.
The third level is a round lighthouse, nine meters high. The lighthouse fuel was sent up through the spiral staircase inside the tower, and after ignition, the light was shot out through a set of special reflectors to shine in all directions.
At that time, there were many ships, fighting day and night in the wind and waves, looking for directions in the boundless ocean. Once they saw the Alexandria light, it was like finding a night pearl in the dark night, and they had a way forward.
The Alexandria Lighthouse not only guides the course of the ships coming and going but also is a strong fortress.
The tower is equipped with a refined bronze mirror, and you can observe the movement of the sea. In ancient times, when there was no modern machinery and equipment, the people of Alexandria, with their simple tools and diligent hands, built such a tall and magnificent lighthouse, which is worthy of the wonder of the world.
It lasted for more than 1,600 years and was destroyed by a great earthquake in 1375 AD. In 1479, a castle was built on the site of the Alexandria Lighthouse.
The fortress now stands tall. There is an Alexandria Nautical Museum in the ancient fortress, which displays rich historical artifacts, including fresco carvings of Egyptian pyramids, a large number of pictures and paintings, and a luscious model of the Alexandria lighthouse.
Today, at the western end of the Faros Peninsula, a modern lighthouse has been built, which still guides the direction of ships from all over the world, just like the ancient lighthouses.
