Where to Find Syria?


Styria is a region located in the southeast of Austria, sharing its southern border entirely with Slovenia. Interestingly, Slovenia also has a region called Styria, which is the southern extension of the Austrian area, sometimes referred to as Lower Styria.


In Austria, Styria is informally divided into three regions: Upper Styria (Obersteiermark), covering the northern and northeastern parts, Western Styria (Weststeiermark), which includes the areas west of Graz; and Eastern Styria (Oststeiermark), encompassing the districts to the east of Graz.

Graz


As Austria's second-largest city, after Vienna, Graz has a population of over 300,000 and a metropolitan area exceeding 600,000. The city’s historic center is home to several key landmarks, including the Town Hall (Rathaus), Schlossberg Hill, which offers spectacular views and can be accessed via the funicular railway, Schlossbergbahn, and the iconic Uhrturm (Clock Tower), a symbol of Graz.


Eggenberg Palace


The majestic Eggenberg Palace, located on the western edge of Graz, was included in UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2010. A stunning example of Baroque architecture, the palace is surrounded by an expansive garden and walls, with a grand west-facing entrance.


Inside, visitors can admire lavish rooms and impressive art collections, including a historical coin collection and the Alte Galerie, which showcases portraits and sculptures from the Middle Ages to the late 19th century.


Dachstein


Dachstein, the highest peak in Styria, is a must-see for any nature lover. Easily accessible via cable car, it also offers numerous hiking trails for those wanting to reach the summit on foot. Once at the top, visitors can enjoy spectacular panoramic views and explore thrilling attractions. Walk across the suspension bridge, a thrilling ‘stairway to nowhere’ with transparent steps, giving the feeling of flying.


Bärenschützklamm


Bärenschützklamm is one of the longest gorges in Styria,and a perfect destination for adventurers. The 4.5-hour loop trail crosses 164 wooden bridges and includes over 2,500 steps. The gorge, declared a natural monument, is home to stunning waterfalls, strange rock formations, and rare flora and fauna.


Riegersburg Castle


Riegersburg Castle, perched atop a volcanic rock in eastern Styria, offers both historical and scenic appeal. Once an impregnable fortress, the castle is known for its museum dedicated to the Leichtenstein family, who still own it today, as well as the fascinating Witches' Museum, which tells the story of the persecution of women accused of witchcraft during the Middle Ages. Visitors can reach the castle on foot or by a modern glass elevator-funicular.
