Hey Lykkers! Are you ready to embark on a journey across Crete, where every turn brings a new surprise?
We had an amazing time exploring this beautiful island, and we can’t wait to share our favorite routes and attractions with you!
One of the highlights of our Crete adventure was hiking through the Samaria Gorge, one of the longest gorges in Europe. The 16-kilometer trail took us through narrow pathways, steep cliffs, and lush greenery, all while surrounded by breathtaking views. We started our journey early in the morning to beat the heat, and it was worth every step. As we walked, we encountered crystal-clear streams, wild goats, and small caves that added to the adventure. The feeling of accomplishment when we reached the end of the gorge was unforgettable!
Opening Hours: The Samaria Gorge is open from May to October, typically from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Ticket Price: 5 EUR per person.
Our journey wouldn’t have been complete without visiting Elafonissi Beach, famous for its pink sands and shallow turquoise waters. We took a scenic drive along the coastal road to reach this paradise, passing by charming villages and olive groves. When we arrived, the pinkish hue of the sand was even more mesmerizing than we imagined. We spent the day swimming, sunbathing, and walking along the sandbars that connect the main beach to the tiny islet. The area was bustling with families, solo travelers, and couples, all soaking in the beauty of this unique spot.
Opening Hours: Open all day, year-round.
Ticket Price: Free entry, but parking fees may apply (around 2-5 EUR).
If you’re planning to explore Crete’s tourist routes, we recommend renting a car. The island’s public transportation is reliable, but having a car gives you the freedom to stop at any scenic spot you discover along the way. We found driving around Crete to be straightforward, with plenty of signs and well-maintained roads. If you’re visiting during peak season (June to August), book your accommodations and car rental in advance to avoid disappointment.
One of the best parts of traveling through Crete is tasting its local cuisine. We enjoyed Dakos (a delicious Cretan salad with tomatoes, olives, and local cheese) and Kalitsounia (sweet or savory pies that are perfect for a snack during your road trips). You’ll find small taverns along the routes where you can sample these dishes for around 5-10 EUR each. Don’t miss out on visiting a local olive oil farm, where you can learn about the production process and even bring home a bottle of freshly made olive oil!
For those looking to make the most of their journey, consider staying at a cozy cottage in one of Crete’s traditional villages. We found a lovely guesthouse near the Samaria Gorge, where we were greeted with homemade Cretan pastries and warm hospitality. The rooms were comfortable and offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Prices start from 50 EUR per night, making it a perfect base for exploring the western side of the island.
Crete is more than just an island; it’s a place where history, culture, and nature come together to create an unforgettable experience. From the rugged beauty of the Samaria Gorge to the serene sands of Elafonissi Beach, every part of Crete has a story to tell. So, Lykkers, pack your bags, grab your cameras, and let’s explore the hidden gems of Crete together! We promise it will be a journey filled with adventure, beauty, and memories that will last a lifetime.
