When we first set foot in Lisbon, one of the destinations high on our list was the iconic Belém Tower, or Torre de Belém.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site, standing proud on the banks of the Tagus River, is a true testament to Portugal’s maritime history. Our visit to this architectural gem was as enchanting as it was educational, and we’re excited to share our experience with you!

Discovering Belém Tower

Our adventure began with a leisurely stroll along the river, leading us to the majestic Belém Tower. This 16th-century fortress, originally constructed as a defense system for the entrance to Lisbon’s harbor, now stands as a symbol of Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. The intricate Manueline architecture, complete with ornate carvings and battlements, instantly captivated us.

As we explored the tower, we marveled at its stunning views of the Tagus River from the terraces. The climb to the top was worth every step, offering panoramic vistas of the city and the river that once saw the departure of countless explorers. Inside, the tower’s interior boasts a fascinating blend of historical artifacts and displays that tell the story of Portugal’s seafaring past.

Visiting Hours and Ticket Information

Belém Tower is open to visitors every day except Mondays. From March to October, it welcomes guests from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM, and from November to February, it’s open from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM. We found the early morning to be the best time to visit, as it allowed us to enjoy the tower with fewer crowds. Tickets cost €8 for adults, while seniors and students can enter for €4.50. Children under 12 can explore for free.

For those planning to stay near Belém Tower, we found several excellent hotels within walking distance. Our top pick was the Altis Belem Hotel & Spa, a luxurious retreat just a short stroll away. Another great option is the Palácio do Governador, a charming boutique hotel situated in a historic building close to the tower. Prices here begin at €150 per night, and the hotel features elegant rooms and a lovely outdoor pool, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration.
